| After a fabulous hotel breakfast (with tons of stolen fruit for my apartment), Mom, Grandma, and I decided to spend the day in Sorrento--the town where we stayed the previous night. We had toyed with going to see the island of Capri, but travel would have been crazy: walk to dock, take elevator to bottom of dock, take boat to Capri, check luggage on island, take lift to top of island, come back down, get luggage, take hydrofoil to Naples, take cab to Naples train station, take train to Florence. Wow-zers. We decided we were more in the mood for a leisurely day, and leisurely it was. We soaked in the sun and explored the shops all around the town. We made our way through a lemon garden, filled to the brim with huge fruits and yellow flowers. We even sampled lemoncello (I don't like it, but Mom and Grandma were diggin' it) made from the lemons in the garden. Though Sorrento is a town for tourists with its souvenirs, faux Italian restaurants, and walking tours, it is simply the price you have to pay for the views. We felt like "real Italians" simply sitting on a bench and people watching for an extended period of time. After a lunch outdoors in the sun, we caught a local train into Naples to get our high speed train back to Florence. |
